Description
Pocahontas, daughter of Chief Powhatan, died at a young age, but during her short life she made an indelible mark on history. According to John Smith, she laid down her life to save his. She was kidnapped by English settlers and converted to Christianity. She then married John Rolfe, a young Englishman, and was presented at Court in London. Garber's poem, dedicated to the mythical and heroic Pocahontas, is typical of the many epic poems produced at the turn of the 20th century, when the country celebrated Jamestown's tertiary centenary, and interest in the settlement was at an all-time high.
